Custom Space is a new online platform that offers customized designs for on-demand bespoke production by connecting a curated roster of international designers to a distributed network of makers & manufacturers around the world.

Custom Space represents a major technological and business innovation, disrupting the current process of generic mass-produced imported furniture & goods and introduces a system of automated, customized on-demand production.

It does this by creating an open but secure end-to-end solution for furniture manufacturing SME’s and designers, to configure and sell their products in an e-commerce environment, connected to an automated manufacturing process.

Customers can now personalise their products on the Custom Space platform to their own needs before any resources are used, or any manufacturing has begun. The Platform then re-directs the order to the closest local manufacturer, encrypting and streaming the digital designs directly to the maker's machines.

This process solves 2 problems. First, it ensures that each designer's intellectual property is maintained as his/her design cannot be reproduced without the knowledge or permission of the system. And secondly, the system automates the process of creating and processing the manufacturing files in the back-end before streaming to the manufacturer, greatly easing their workload and freeing them up to do what they do best - Making.

The Team

Thierry Giles
CEO + Founder

Thierry grew up on a horse ranch in Quebec, Canada. He studied Design and Computational Art at Concordia University, Bauhaus University and Malmö University before working as a UX designer and venture architect in Sweden and Germany.

He is driven by the idea of enabling millions to invent their own creative living spces anywhere in the world and is absolutely passionate about designing plant filled spaces and disrupting the old ways of mass producing dumb and impersonal products.

Sai Manoj
CTO + Founder

Manoj is obsessed with creating systems that can generate value in a scalable and repetitive way.

Paolo de Jesus
CPO + Founder

After studying Product & Industrial design at Curtin University in Perth, Australia, Paolo started his career as a chair designer for a local solid timber furniture manufacturer.

He moved to the UK in the mid 2000’s, spending 10+ years working in the fast paced London ‘Design-Art’ scene, 5 of which as the Head of Production at the prestigious David Gill Galleries.

Moving to Berlin in 2017, he founded ‘Nomade Editions’ as a DIY furniture label, exploring the ways in which design could respond to current environmental and economic situations through distributed Design and manufacturing.

Michael Marianek
Creative Adviser + Founder

Michael is the Co-Founder of Spirit of Space, a communication agency that uses film and stories for architects, artists and designers to reveal why Design matters.

He started the coompany SchneeLogistik after hearing about the tragic accident of large roofs collapsing under the weight of snow accumulations. With his partners, they invented a novel system to measure and manage snow removal for large corporations.

‘I believe that designers must take time to connect, communicate, and empathize with people outside the profession to add value to a place. I used to work at the laser cut lab of Milwaukee university and the flame and smell of freshly cut designs are still burning in me. ’

Rober Fischer
Marketing and fundraising

Robert Fischer studied media and art at the Bauhaus University where he met Michael. They started multiple projects together before he founded Manicx.com where he realised the first successful Kickstarter project in Europe, among many other projects.

‘I am passionate about making projects take off and telling stories that inspire communities of motivated people to support them. I am a firm believer in the power of the crowd and of communication. I love to find the key words and images that encapsulate a whole concept in an easily repeatable phrase. My goal is to make the coach the most creative individual in the world, to be able to get out of shadow and live from their craft.’

Mouhammed Gaye
Regional Operation Director

Mouhammed started working on the prototype version of SUperNow in Senegal. They started in a garage a few minutes away from his house, before rapidly growing to a proper warehouse where he could employ his friends and have fun inventing and producing furniture designs for customers.

‘I am passionate about seeing young people being able to start and grow their creative businesses. I love to see the energy and enthusiasm from workers and investors when I show them the potential of our machines and the collection of designs we are working hard to bring to all of them. ’

Our Story

The Custom Space story starts with our Founder Thierry Giles, and his frustration with the difficulties of producing designs locally during his time running CNC workshops in Senegal. Having to rely instead on the importation of tasteless designs or the falsely inflated value of 'star' designers' products, he would look for an alternative way to utilise local materials and resources.

The second thread of the story also originates from our love of CNC machining, the use of robots, 3D printers and DIY recycled plastic injection machines to produce objects of all sorts.

We therefore decided to hack CNC and robotic controllers to figure out a way to connect them to the web - building upon the coming future of the Fourth Industrial Revolution (Industry 4.0)

We built an online platform that would store protected versions of designs and then, on the fly, generate the bespoke manufacturing production code that CNC machines require to make parts.

Our Technical founder Manoj, has brilliantly succeeded in creating a way to safely and securely stream this code from the platform to any connected machine in the world and thus our network of designers and makers was born.

Teaming up with like-minded friends such as Studio Dlux in Brazil and Nomade Editions in Berlin, we are gathering designs and building a community of designers and manufacturers offering their creations and services around the world.
